Hongie (1962), a Chinese painter born in Shanghai, has devoted her artistic journey to exploring the dialogue between nature and emotion. Her fascination with painting deepened through her studies alongside her husband, the French painter Alain Géneau Brunet, who nurtured her practice while encouraging her own voice to emerge.
Living in a city surrounded by a vast and poetic forest, Hongie is inspired to paint directly from nature, translating the play of light, the quiet power of trees, and the shifting moods of the seasons onto canvas. Inspired by the Barbizon School, she embraces loose brushwork, a focus on light and colour, and a deep sensitivity to atmosphere that allows her to capture both the physical presence and the soul of the landscape.
In her art, Hongie weaves together East and West, past and present. Her canvases invite viewers to enter the forest as she experiences it, at once a tangible place and an inner realm of imagination, emotion, and dream. Each work is both a reflection of the natural world and a meditation on its timeless mystery.
